There are two common methods for splitting the tip among multiple people: 1) Equal splitting: divide the total bill (including tip) equally among each person, this is the simplest method and suitable for most situations; 2) Proportional splitting: split the tip based on the proportion of each person's consumption amount, this method is more fair but requires more complex calculations. Our calculator uses the equal splitting method by default, just enter the number of people and the system will automatically calculate the total amount and tip amount each person should pay.

Tipping customs vary greatly across different countries: 1) United States and Canada: tipping culture is very common, typically 15-20% of the bill; 2) Europe: many countries already include service charges in the bill, additional tipping is typically 5-10% or simply rounding up; 3) Asia: countries like Japan, China, and South Korea traditionally don't expect tips, and in some places, it may even be considered offensive; 4) Australia: tipping is not expected, but for quality service, about 10% may be given; 5) Middle East: some countries have a 10-15% tipping expectation. It's best to research the specific customs of your destination before traveling.

When handling bills that include taxes, there are two common practices regarding tip calculation: 1) Based on pre-tax amount: in some regions, tips are customarily calculated on the pre-tax bill amount, as taxes are not part of the restaurant's service; 2) Based on post-tax amount: in other regions, tips are calculated on the final total bill amount (including taxes), which is simpler and more straightforward. Our calculator allows you to input any amount as the bill base, you can choose to input either the pre-tax or post-tax amount according to local customs. If unsure, calculating the tip based on the post-tax total is generally the safest practice.
